I Gotz A Bluebird!

Finally…..

When I moved the big plant container further out into the yard,

IMG_1572

I left the tray behind.I couldn’t move both,as they were too heavy.I ended up putting some of the large rocks, the County gave me,under the tray, and setting the tray on them.Thinking it might become yard art.

You know I love my yard art…

Fast forward to today..

While laying the new sod,in the front yard,I kept noticing this little bird flitting back and forth to the tray…

(which had become filled with water from the sprinklers).

“What kind of bird is that?” I wondered….

I’m not too bird savvy….

It didn’t seem to be afraid of me,so I ran and got the camera, and snapped away.

But still,I wanted to know.

What was it?

I know….

I’ll call Dad.

He’ll know….

I call and describe the bird.

Without thinking,he says,”It sounds like an Eastern Bluebird. It’s probably a juvenile. It’s that time of year.”

Hmmmm…I’ll look it up.Just to make sure.

Bingo!!!!

He was right!

Juvenile Eastern Bluebird!

Awesome photos! I'm pretty sure that is actually a male Northern Parula (Parula americana) though. It is a type of warbler. I've noticed too they are a lot less shy than most birds. I have never seen an Eastern Bluebird where I live now. I think I live just south of their southern limit. I really miss them, as they were my fave backyard bird back in Georgia.

FG-you may be right, but isn't this a little late in the year for Parula? According to my Audobon book(I know nothing about birds witout the book)they aren't found this far south at this time of year.Could this be a late bloomer?

He does look a wee bit dark to be an Eastern Bluebird. Also, all the bluebirds I've seen have been decidedly ORANGE down the front, not yellowy in the slightest - unless that's a hallmark of a juvenile? He sure is pretty, whatever he is :)

Hey Chris,
What fun! It is definitely a Northern Parula. They are still in my garden and they love the bird baths. As a matter of fact they will come from up in the oaks while I'm hand watering and play in the leaves to get some of that fresh water. Really pretty little guys.

I think they are an "overlap" breed, just like hummingbirds, here where I live. See my post: http://gardeninpeace.blogspot.com/2011/03/another-reason-to-grow-bottlebrush.html

Cute little guy whoever he is! I'm like you Chris, I see a different bird and I have to look it up and still I really don't know for sure what kind of bird it is. It seems like both our gardening efforts are bringing some different birds into our yards though and that is a very good thing.
